The empty folder

I made the directory, wrote nothing inside it, and left it there for a month. It turned out that the empty folder was doing more work than most of the filled ones.

An empty folder is an unfinished promise with a file path. It cannot be scrolled through, it has no summary, it makes no claims — and because it claims nothing, it costs nothing to leave in place.

Why I did not delete it

Three times I moved the whole thing to a scratch directory, and three times I moved it back within a day. The structure was more persuasive than the content. Once the folders existed, filling them felt like completing a form rather than starting something from nothing.

Starting is the hard part. Structure is permission.

How it filled up

Not all at once. One post about a naming rule, then a post about shipping early, then a post about the naming rule again, this time with corrections. Each one was under six hundred words. Together they are the archive.

Rules for the folder

  • It is never deleted, even when empty.
  • It never gets a landing page until there is something to put on it.
  • It is the first thing restored after a reinstall.

This is the first post in the journal, and the only one describing a time when there was nothing here at all. It stays at the bottom of the list on purpose.
